You have been in a Long Term Relationship with your partner but every time you look at him, he looks like your brother! The man who needs to be the crush of your life, the one who ought to be enjoying abed with looks like your cheesy brother the moment he giggles. Huh! This is so nonsensical.
According to a new study published in PLOS Genetics, this looking alike of couples isn’t a coincidence. It reflects the traits prevalent in olden times to marry someone with the same ancestry.
The researchers in the study looked at the genomes of spouses from three generations of people and 879 spousal pairs from Framingham, Massachusetts, who were originally part of a 1948 heart health study. So, how does this creepy phenomenon actually take place? Well, here is how.
When most of these couples got married, they picked up their significant other from the population of the same ancestry or those that looked so similar to them that they often shared the same genomic structure. Overtime, the tendency to get married to people who are like you or resemble you in many ways got increased.
Study participants with Northern European, Southern European and Ashkenazi are likely to hook up with people who are so similar to them or belonged to the same ancestry. Overtime, people didn’t want to hook up with people who are so like them. Thanks to dating apps that prompted people to look for divergent options. People are less likely to choose their partners from the same ancestry.
This is how this phenomenon started but will end soon, once we resolve to not date people who are like us!!
